 The medical material is from the root of Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.)Nannf. or C. tangshen Oliv., family Capanulaceae .It is also named Tang Sheng, Lu Tang, Chuan Tang, East Tang, and West Tang.The best quality is Tung Tang It is planted mainly in Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu. It is good to harvest in autumn. It is used crudely before dried and cut into segments. It is sweet in flavor, warm in nature, and attributive to the spleen and lung meridians. It invigorates stomach and spleen, benefit qi , and promote producing body fluid and nourishing blood. According to pharmacopoeia, Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.)Nannf. and C. tangshen Oliv. are normal Tang Sheng. Besides of them, others are false such as Codonopsis tubulosa Kom., Codonopsis clematida (Schrenk) Clarke, Codonopsis subglobosa W. W. Smith, Codonopsis canescens Nannf., Codonopsis nervosa (Chipp)Nannf., Codonopsis bulleyana Forrest ex Diels, Codonopsis lanceolata (Sieb. Et Zucc) Trautv.), Campanumoea javanica Bl., Campanumoea javanica Bl. Subso. Japonica (Makino)Hong, Melandrium vicidulum (Bur. Et Fr.)Will. var. szechuanense (Will.) Hand ~Mazz., Melandrium tatarinowii (Regel)Tsui, Sphallerocarpus gracilis (Bess)K. Pol., Psammosilene tunicoides W. C. Wu et C. Y. Wu ( 2,3,6,7,8,9,11,12,13 ) .
